Chapter 634

Mason Evans's voice paused on the phone.

"You already know that the heirs of the Sterling Family are all women."

"Yes."

"But the world is fair. Highly intelligent parents don't necessarily have equally smart children. The competition for the heir in each generation of the Sterling Family is exceptionally brutal. Besides selecting the heir, they also choose the top ten. The next generation's heir is born from the daughters of these ten people. In other words, only the descendants of the top ten are eligible to participate in the election."

Evelyn Ross was silent for a moment.

"But my mother wasn't in the top ten of the previous generation. So I'm not eligible."

If her mother had been in the top ten, then Isabella Ashcroft, who was switched at birth, should also have been a candidate.

But Isabella wasn't.

Evelyn grew up in the Sterling Family and knew the lives of every member intimately.

Isabella had never experienced any external interference.

Mason spoke.

"Right, your mother wasn't in the top ten. But have you ever considered one thing?"

"What?"

"The candidates of each generation are competitors. There's only one winner. Those who lose, missing by just a step, how could they accept it? They would pin their hopes on their daughters. So the losers would desperately try to have children. But these women, having fought hard for years, often have damaged health. They might be unable to conceive, or unable to have a girl. Asking them to give up is clearly impossible."

Evelyn began to understand faintly.

Her sister's adoptive parents might have come about this way.

"So?"

Mason sighed.

"So, the top ten of the previous generation, including the heir, if they couldn't have children, could adopt the daughters of the losers. As long as the child has Sterling Family blood, as long as her biological or adoptive parents were in the previous generation's top ten, she could become a competitor in this generation."

Evelyn's pupils contracted sharply.

"When mother gave birth to my sister, and she was stolen by someone from the Sterling Family, was it because someone from the previous generation couldn't have a girl?"

"Exactly."

Mason's voice was calm.

"Most Sterling Family heirs are cold-blooded and don't have fixed partners. They only want offspring, generally not men. Your sister's adoptive mother was schemed against during the competition back then, her uterus was damaged, and she became infertile. She accidentally learned of your mother's whereabouts and sent people to snatch the child."

Mason paused.

"Your mother was a loser, forbidden to leave the Sterling Family for life. So she always hid her background. During her pregSterlingcy, she never went for prenatal checkups and didn't know she was carrying twins. Your sister's adoptive mother stole your sister, and your mother was completely unaware."

"Your sister grew up in the Sterling Family until she was five. Then she was brought to the United States by her adoptive mother's subordinates and settled in New York. To the outside world, those two subordinates were her adoptive father and mother. That's why her adoptive father also has the surname Sterling. Because he is a servant of the Sterling Family."

After saying this, Mason continued.

"In the past, the Sterling Family frantically cultivated descendants. But now, daughters in the Sterling Family are becoming fewer. As far as I know, there are only nine candidates in your generation. Each of the previous generation's top ten families contributed one daughter, except one family had no girl. So, your sister has a significant advantage in terms of offspring. Because she has Chloe."

Chloe.

Evelyn suddenly remembered the messages sent earlier by Nicole Sterling and the Fox.

They both wanted to take Chloe.

Because the Sterling Family was struggling to have descendants?

So Chloe became a hot commodity?

Evelyn pressed her lips together.

Her phone suddenly vibrated.

Another call was coming in.

Evelyn looked down.

The caller ID wasn't an unknown number.

It was a name saved in her contacts.

The Fox.

Evelyn immediately said.

"I need to take another call."

She ended the call with Mason and answered the Fox's incoming call.
