Chapter 642
Grace Lorenz didn't even know how to cry anymore.
She was completely stunned.
How could her grandfather be a spy?
This thought kept circling in her mind, but she couldn't make sense of it.
Evelyn Ross watched her devastated state and asked softly, "Is there evidence for that money?"
Grace's lips were bitten white.
"Yes."
Her voice trembled. "Every transfer record has been traced. Even though they went through overseas accounts with multiple layers of disguise, they all ended up in Grandfather's private account."
She paused, her voice dropping even lower. "Over more than a decade, the cumulative amount... is billions of dollars."
Evelyn's pupils contracted slightly.
That number was indeed staggering.
The Lorenz family wasn't among the top-tier elites, but they were a century-old established family with deep roots.
Only such an astronomical sum could tempt Elder Lorenz.
Grace wiped her tears, her voice full of confusion. "What did he need so much money for? My father and I have never seen this money. There haven't been any major expenditures at home... Yet the money is just sitting there, untouched."
She looked at Evelyn, her eyes bewildered. "Evelyn, do you really think Grandfather is a spy?"
Evelyn patted her shoulder. "Let's see the old gentleman first."
Grace nodded.
Just as the two were about to go inside, Alexander Vance walked over from the side.
He had clearly overheard their conversation and looked at Evelyn with a grave expression. "Evelyn, there's something I need to remind you about."
Evelyn was taken aback. "What?"
Alexander leaned close to her ear and whispered a few sentences.
Evelyn's face changed slightly, and she looked sharply at him.
Alexander nodded at her.
Evelyn took a deep breath. "I understand."
After speaking, she took Grace's hand and walked into the Special Operations Division building.
As soon as they entered, the atmosphere felt distinctly different.
When Grace had come before, even though Elder Lorenz had already fallen from power, people had still treated her with some courtesy out of respect for their long-standing relationship.
But today, everyone's eyes had changed.
Disdain, wariness, even hostility.
Someone seemed about to say something, but upon seeing Evelyn, they swallowed their words.
Evelyn was the First Senior Sister of the Cortez Sect. Her status within the Special Operations Division was unique. No one dared to offend her lightly.
Grace ignored these gazes. Right now, she just wanted to see her grandfather.
The two walked straight toward the office where Elder Lorenz was being held.
Before they could get close, they saw a crowd gathered three layers deep around the door.
The guard on duty saw them and immediately stepped forward to block their way.
"First Senior Sister, a confessed spy is being held here. Unauthorized personnel are not permitted to enter."
As he spoke, his cold gaze swept over Grace.
Grace immediately said, "There must be some misunderstanding here!"
"Misunderstanding?"
The guard sneered. "The evidence is conclusive. The transfer records go back more than a decade. Miss Lorenz, who would have started framing the old gentleman from that long ago? Besides, if the old gentleman had proactively reported and clarified the matter when the first sum entered his account, today's situation wouldn't have happened."
He paused, his tone turning even colder. "That money was just sitting in his account, and the higher-ups knew nothing about it. What is that if not espionage?"
Grace opened her mouth but couldn't find any words.
The guard then looked at Evelyn. "First Senior Sister, it's better for you to keep your distance from such people. The granddaughter of an old spy—who knows if she's an accomplice? Even though there's no evidence yet, the technical information the old gentleman leaked covers many areas. Perhaps Miss Lorenz helped obtain some of it!"
"I did not!"
Grace trembled with anger.
"Whether you did or not will be determined after investigation."
The guard's tone was indifferent. "But even after it's cleared up, as the daughter of a spy, Miss Lorenz will no longer enjoy our trust in the future. Please understand."
Grace's eyes reddened, but she couldn't muster a rebuttal.
Evelyn stepped forward. "I want to see Elder Lorenz."
The guard frowned. "That requires Deputy Director Wright's signature."
"Signature?"
Ethan Valentine's voice came from behind, tinged with sarcasm. "The status of the Cortez Sect's leader within the Special Operations Division is equivalent to that of the Director. The First Senior Sister's rank is on par with a Deputy Director. Since when does the First Senior Sister need Deputy Director Wright's approval to do anything?"
He walked to Evelyn's side, looking coldly at the guard. "Is the Special Operations Division no longer treating the Cortez Sect as an external ally? Or do you want to order us around like subordinates?"
The guard's expression changed, and he didn't dare say anything more, reluctantly stepping aside.
"First Senior Sister, please go in."
Grace immediately followed.
The guard seemed to want to stop her, but Ethan shot him a look. "If Deputy Director Wright brought someone, would you dare to stop them?"
The guard immediately fell silent, watching helplessly as the two entered the office.
