Chapter 512

Mrs. White's words struck like a thunderbolt.

Jane and Nathan both froze in place, their faces etched with shock.

Nathan frowned deeply. "Mom, what do you mean? Why are you doing this? You wouldn't really do something foolish, right?"

Mrs. White let out a cold laugh and jerked her wrist.

The sharp blade instantly broke the skin, leaving a thin, bloody line on her neck.

Nathan's pupils contracted sharply.

Jane was also terrified, rushing forward with a frantic, choked sound in her throat. Her hands waved desperately, her whole body trembling.

Mrs. White took a step back, shouting harshly, "Don't come any closer! Take one more step, and I'll die right in front of you!"

Both of them immediately stopped moving.

Mrs. White stared fixedly at Nathan, her voice hoarse. "I've been strong my whole life, working tirelessly to raise you. It wasn't so you could become a slave to a mute! Nathan, I'm asking you, are you going to break up with her or not?"

Nathan's eyes widened, looking at his mother with disbelief.

Jane also stood rooted to the spot, her mind blank.

Nathan clenched his fists, his knuckles turning white. "Mom, don't do this... Let's talk this through properly, okay? Please, put the knife down..."

"Talk properly? Would you even listen?" Mrs. White roared. "Nathan, you forced me into this! You're young, you have no idea how difficult life with a mute person is! I gave birth to you healthy and whole, not so you could spend your life serving someone else... I don't want you to be dragged down by this mute for the rest of your life! Am I wrong?"

Nathan shook his head. "You're not wrong, I am... Mom, I failed to live up to your expectations. Please, put the knife down, and we can talk, okay?"

"I can't get through to you anymore. You're grown, your wings are hardened." Mrs. White's voice trembled. "When you chose your major in college, everyone in the family is in electronics, but you insisted on studying medicine. I let you have your way. But marriage is for a lifetime! I can't let you be reckless! On this matter, you must listen to me!"

Nathan was on the verge of breaking down.

He suddenly stepped forward and dropped to his knees before his mother with a thud. "Mom, I'm begging you... Please, put the knife down. Don't force me like this, okay?"

Mrs. White remained unmoved. "I'm forcing you for your own good! I'll ask you one last time, are you breaking up with Jane or not?"

Nathan closed his eyes in agony.

Jane, panicked, rushed over, frantically waving her hands at Nathan, urging him to agree to the breakup.

She didn't want a life on her conscience. She couldn't bear that burden.

But Nathan shook his head. "No, Jane, I can't let you go..."

Tears streamed down Jane's face in desperation. She pushed him hard, trying to make him let go.

But she was still weak from her recent illness and couldn't break free from Nathan's grip.

Just then, Mrs. White said sharply, "If you choose her, then I'll die right here! I mean what I say!"

She jerked her wrist with force, driving the blade deeper into her skin. Blood immediately welled up.

Nathan cried out in horror, "Mom, no!"

He released Jane and scrambled on his knees to his mother's feet, wrapping his arms around her legs. "Mom, let go... Don't do this, I'm begging you!"

Jane looked at her suddenly empty hand, her heart turning cold.

She turned her gaze to Mrs. White, knowing she had lost.

No son could watch his mother die before his eyes.

Jane gave a bitter smile.

Mrs. White stared Nathan down. "Well? Are you breaking up with her or not?"

Blood trickled down her neck. Nathan immediately shouted, "Yes! I'll break up! Please, don't do this, I'm begging you!"

But Mrs. White still didn't release the knife, pressing further. "Then I want you to promise me you'll go on a date with the young lady from the Evans family. Do you agree?"

Seeing the stark red blood, Nathan didn't dare hesitate. "I agree! I agree!"

Only then did Mrs. White let go.

The knife clattered to the ground.

Mrs. White looked at Jane with the air of a victor. "I originally wanted you two to part on good terms, but you wouldn't listen. Don't blame me! Nathan, come home with me now!"

Nathan looked at Jane.

Tears pooled in Jane's eyes.

Nathan's eyes also glistened with tears.

Suddenly, with another thud, he knelt before his mother again. "Mom, I truly love Jane... I truly love her. Can't you please stop forcing me?"

Mrs. White said coldly, "I'm not forcing you. You're forcing me! I will never agree to you marrying her!"

Nathan collapsed to the ground.

He looked at Jane in anguish.

But Jane was using sign language, trying to convey something.

She understood Nathan's pain. She didn't want to put him in this impossible position.

She was desperately trying to tell him, "I am Jane Evans... I am the young lady from the Evans family..."

But Nathan could only understand simple, everyday signs. He couldn't comprehend such a complex message.

At school, Jane usually communicated by writing or typing on her phone.

Seeing his confused expression, Jane hurriedly searched the yard for the notebook and pen Mrs. White had kicked away earlier.

Seeing this, Mrs. White immediately yelled, "Nathan, you're coming home with me right now! Otherwise, I have a hundred ways to die in front of you!"

Nathan slowly rose from the ground.

He looked at Jane and suddenly gave her a deep bow.

His face was wet with tears, his whole demeanor utterly defeated. He said hoarsely, "Jane, I'm sorry..."

He turned to leave.

Jane immediately grabbed his hand, signing again, "I am the Evans family's young lady! I am!"

Unfortunately, Nathan still couldn't understand.

He looked at her blankly.

Mrs. White had already rushed over, one hand pressing against her bleeding neck, the other shoving Jane away hard. "My son is leaving! Why are you still clinging to him?!"

The push sent Jane stumbling backward.

Nathan looked at her with heartache, but Mrs. White grabbed his wrist. "Come with me!"

Jane fell to the ground, her hand landing on some scattered papers.

On them were the words she had shown Mrs. White earlier: [They won't bully me anymore, because I am the biological daughter they've been searching for all these years!]

Jane's eyes lit up. She immediately grabbed the paper, rushed over to Nathan and Mrs. White, and held it up high.

Nathan, I am the Evans family's young lady!

We don't have to break up!
